I. Scope
  1. Cooler and freezer rooms or buildings shall be constructed with modular pre-frabricated, precision formed, metal-clad insulated panels to conform with drawings. Quality demanded must be equal to those manufactured by Harford Duracool LLC, Aberdeen, MD.
  2. Pre-submitted proof must accompany all proposals establishing conformance with the following:
    1. National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) Standard 7 construction.
    2. Underwriters' Laboratories (UL) approval of door electrical circuit assembly.
    3. Compliance with fire hazard classification ASTM-E84 (L723)*.
    4. Factory Mutual Standard 4880 Approval Requirements for Class I Fire as well as ceiling panels. (Identification #OR3AI AM).
*This rating is not intended to reflect hazards presented by materials under actual fire conditions.

II. Panel Construction
  1. All panel sections will be precisely shaped with metal pans processed through roll forming equipment and steel dies. Urethane insulation will be injected (poured-in-place) to bond with the inner and outer metal pans when confined within temperature controlled fixtures or molds. Finished panels will be insulated with 100% urethane without internal wood, wood fiber, steel perimeter or substructure except for cam locking devices, entrance door frames, panels of unusual configuration and special "opening" perimters -see paragraphs II-D, IV-B and VIII-A2.
  2. All panels will be 4" thick in widths of 11-5/8", 23-1/4", 34-7/8" and 46-1/2" as selected to conform with drawings. Corner panels shall be 11-5/8" x 11-5/8", 90 degrees angled with interior and exterior radius. All wall and ceiling lengths will be provided with a DOUBLE 90 degrees formed edge (17/32" initial flange, 11/32" return) to provide maximum panel rigidity and strength. Floor panels (4" thickness) shall have a 1/2" radius cove at interior perimeter to facilitate cleaning. All panels edges will have a formed urethane tongue or groove configuration with factory foamed-in-place compression gaskets on interior and exterior of all male edges.
  3. Urethane insulation will be poured-in-place to a minimum density of 2.2 pounds per cubic foot (yielding compression strength of 30 PSI). No CFC's shall be used as an expanding agent in the manufacturing process. Established thermal conductivity factor ("K") is 0.142 BTU/hr./sq. ft./degree (F)/inch. The overall coefficient of heat transfer ("U" Factor) is .0355 ("K" factor divided by 4" panel thickness). The resulting "R" value or assigned insulation efficiency rating is 28.
  4. Panels will be equipped with steel cam locking devices foamed-in-place at exact matching location within tongue and groove perimeters. All locks will have integral rear flanges to permanently anchor their position without use of temperature conductive strapping. Male and female locks shall be precisely situated to secure all panels and uniformly compress perimeter gaskets. Access to lock assembly must be provided on interior of panels allowing erection of structure within confined areas. Lock access ports will have closure snap-in caps of colored PVC to match interior panel finish.

III. Finish
  1. Panel surface finish will be selected from the following list of standard material best suited to location and/or application of structure. A combination of materials (interior versus exterior) will be selected to satisfy aesthetic and economic design requirements.
    1. Walls - interior or exterior in the following: 26 gauge embossed Galvalume™ steel with baked-on, "stone white", 18 gauge smooth aluminum with a baked-on white acrylic enamel finish, 20 gauge stucco-embossed aluminum (natural finish), 22 gauge or 20 gauge type 304 stainless steel with a number 4 finish.
    2. Ceilings - interior finish in any material listed for walls above. Exterior edge caps to match adjacent walls. Top surface will be 26 gauge smooth Galvalume™ unless otherwise specified.
    3. Floors - interior surface in the following: .080 textured aluminum with underlayment or 16 gauge, type 304 stainless steel with 2B finish. Exterior edge caps are always stainless steel. Underside will be 26 gauge smooth Galvalume™ unless otherwise specified.
Note: Listed floor surface material will support stationary loads - uniformly distributed - to 600 pounds per square foot.
    4. Special application may dictate use of non-standard finish - consult factory.

IV. Entrance Door and Section
  1. Hinged entrance doors with swing and net opening size will be provided in either 46-1/2" or 69-3/4" wide sections as shown on drawings and listed in schedule. (Select applicable size from the following: 36" x 76" and 41" x 76" for 7'6-1/2" high structures, 36" x 78", 41" x 78", 48" x 84" and 54" x 84" for 8'6-1/2" and higher structures).
Note: 60" wide hinged doors available in special frame - consult factory.
    1. Entrance door shall be flush-mounted, infitting type with full 4" thickness insulated by poured-in-place urethane as specified for panels. Interior and exterior finish shall be as listed (selected from material shown in Paragraph III-A-1).
    2. Each door will be provided with two (2) heavy duty self-closing hinges (minimum 7" leaf), followed by pull handle. An inside keylock release is provided. Hydraulic door closer. All hardware must be attached with stainless steel machine screws. Screws will be fastened into minimum 14 gauge tap plates foamed into door panel. Standard hardware finish to be brushed chrome.
    3. A bellows-type thermoplastic gasket with a magnetic core will be provided at top and strike side of interior door flange with cushion core on hinge side to prevent binding. The gasket retainer - an integral part of door assembly - will allow easy replacement of gasket in the event of damage through misuse. A flexible double blade "sweep" wiper gasket will be provided at the bottom of door. All gasket material is resistant to sunlight, water, mild cleaning soap, oil and fat.
    4. All brite chrome hardware, pull handles, cylinder lock handles and dead bolt locking hardware available as selected options.
  2. Door section will be constructed with an opening framed by a non-conductive heavy duty extrusion. Insulation of this section will be as described for all panels. Finish shall be as listed (not necessarily same as selected for applicable door).
    1. Jamb member of heavy duty FRP pultrusion will be foamed-in-place without screws or other visible fasteners within door section assembly. The door face of jamb will contain an anti-condensate heater circuit concealed behind a highly polished, magnet attracting, stainless steel channel to insure a positive frost-free seal (freezer only).
Note: The heavy-duty FRP pultrusion provides a thermal barrier that eliminates a costly second heater circuit required on other low temperature doors. (Consider the energy savings of that!)
    2. A heavy gauge stainless steel sill plate shall be provided for all hinged doors. Heater circuit will trace multiple runs beneath sill to prevent frost or moisture accumulation and profile design will insure contact by both blades of door wiper gasket (freezers only).
    3. The exterior "strike" side of each door section will be provided with a flush-mounted toggle switch and pilot light indicator. The cover plate will be chrome plated. An incandescent vapor-proof light fixture will be supplied and mounted on interior of section - over opening. All pre-wiring shall be accomplished at the factory by material and performance guidelines approved by Underwriters' Laboratories (UL).
    4. A 2" diameter, flush-mounted dial thermometer will be supplied on one entrance door section for each refrigerated room or compartment. (In case of additional entries, thermometers may be selected as desired.) The thermometer shall have a highly visible "safety range" color code on dial, be equipped with recalibration device, have both Fahrenheit and Centigrade scales in 2° increments and have a nickel-plated capillary/bulb assembly to prevent reactive toxicity. Mounting flange and ring shall be chrome-plated.

V. Screeds
  1. Perimeter vinyl screeds must be provided for walk-in structures without floor panels. The screed layout will provide an exact outline of the refrigerated area and supply a base for leveling procedures as prescribed by installation instructions.
    1. Screed shall be extruded PVC channel formed to allow a minimum 2" insertion of vertical panels.
    2. Internal reinforced shoulders will be an integral part of screed to assume panel weight without profile distortion.
    3. Screed configuration to provide minimum 3/4" sanitary cove to floor surface.
    4. Radius corner and partition "T" sections to be provided by factory to eliminate unacceptable field cuts and splices at these junctures.
  2. Metal clad foam screeds - 4-1/2" high - will be provided when specified for with floor/floorless combination structures or when conditions dictate its appropriate application.
    1. Foam core screeds will be clad in 24 gauge stainless steel - regardless of panel surface metal - to provide rust resistant perimeter at structure base.
    2. Foam screed will have female top configuration and pins to accept all bottom corner and wall male locks.
    3. Screed to be secured in exact position by use of concealed "Grabber" anchors. (Anchor "Grabber" assemblies to be provided at all corners and at a maximum 6' intervals.)
    4. Metal cove base will be provided to form a sanitary cove on interior and exposed exterior screed-to-floor juncture if another medium (such as quarry tile) is not used. Cove will be fabricated from 22 gauge stainless steel and provided with factory formed interior and exterior coved corners and required lengths. Factory will provide NSF recognized RTV sealant and installation procedure.

VI. Partitions
  1. Wall, floor and screed sections used in location of partition walls for multi-compartment structures will be supplied with a fully coved "T" configuration to provide a thermal break between various temperature rooms. Floor cove-to-wall and perimeter wall-to-partition will be 1/2" radius. Ceiling panel will have a foamed-in thermal break (not coved). No attaching angles are allowed to effect construction of partitions.

VII. Special Obligatory Considerations
  1. Specify that all walk-in coolers and freezers herein described must be equal to quality standards established by Harford Duracool LLC, Aberdeen, MD.
  2. Installation guidelines must accompany all panel structures in the form of complete panel assembly and erection instructions. Accepted construction procedure and special techniques must be described. All necessary working drawings with dimensional detail shall be supplied to illustrate exact location of specific panels. Drawings must clearly indicate inside and outside diagonal dimensions to facilitate "square" layout of all regular shaped structures.
  3. WARRANTY from Harford Duracool LLC certifies to original purchaser that their foamed-in-place panels will be free of defects in material and workmanship when those panels are installed properly and used in normal service for a period of ten (10) years. Parts and hardware not manufactured by Harford (door hardware, electric components and various optional accessories listed below) shall be guaranteed against defects in material and workmanship-under normal use and service-for a period allowed Harford by their vendor. Harford will replace any panel or part they accept as defective under these guidelines (not including freight and/or labor costs).
